Standing Against Islamophobia

Last week, I shared a message with you on standing against hate and discrimination, which is unfortunately on the rise for several communities. Sadly, I’m writing you again today because of the terrible act of violence in London, Ont. which claimed the lives of four family members and injured a young child. Three generations of a family were killed while out for a walk, simply for being Muslim.

This is an unthinkable tragedy for the family, for their community and for all of us, and is yet another sad reminder that Canada is not immune to acts of hate and terror. To our colleagues in the Toronto Public Service, especially our Muslim colleagues, who feel shaken right now, please know that the Senior Leadership Team and I stand with you against hate and Islamophobia which have no place in our society.

If you require support, the Employee Assistance Program is available to provide culturally sensitive counselling and referral services for staff and eligible family members. The Human Rights Office is also available to staff seeking confidential advice, information and assistance related to human rights, discrimination and harassment issues.

Through the Toronto for All campaign, the City also offers resources and tools to help confront Islamophobia, in partnership with the Ontario Council of Agencies Serving Immigrants. Please educate yourselves on the issues facing the Muslim community and find out how you can be an ally.

As we grieve for the lives lost and with all those hurting in our community, I encourage you to join me in recommitting to fostering a culture free of hate and discrimination where all of us can feel safe and included.
